Phylum Brachiopoda Composita


Composita is hard to find among the larger, more conspicuous fossils at this site. The examples above, found here, show only the aperture area where the shell opened.


This photo shows several Composita specimens collected from a different site. Composita held itself to the sea floor by a fleshy stalk called a pedicle, which emerged from a hole in the shell called the foramen. Compare the top specimen to the photos above.
